Mpox is a disease caused by infection with the mpox virus.
It does not easily spread between people, as it usually requires prolonged physical or intimate (skin-to-skin) contact with an infectious person.
The most at-risk groups are gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.
People can reduce their risk by limiting the number of sexual partners to a small group and maintaining contact details of sexual partners to assist with contact tracing. If you develop symptoms, ask your health practitioner for an mpox test.
In Victoria, the mpox vaccine (JYNNEOS®) is now available free-of-charge for eligible people who meet these criteria.
More information about mpox, including translated factsheets, can be found at the Better Health Channel. Information for clinicians is available at the Victorian Department of Health.
In July 2024, ATAGI provided its recommendations for the mpox vaccine, including information on booster doses, which it does not recommend.
Free mpox vaccine is widely available for eligible people through a number of local providers, including sexual health clinics, hospitals, GPs and pharmacies. A statewide list can be found here: Mpox immunisation providers – Better Health Channel

Buruli ulcer is a skin disease that has affected numerous people in our catchment, particularly on the Mornington Peninsula.
There is increasing evidence that mosquitoes play a role in transmitting the infection in Victoria, which is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium ulcerans.
Toxins made by the bacteria destroy skin cells, small blood vessels and the fat under the skin, which causes ulcers and skin loss.
Ulcers can grow bigger over time meaning early recognition, diagnosis and prompt treatment is important.
The best way to reduce your risk of contracting Buruli ulcer is to avoid mosquito bites.
