Rapid Antigen Tests

Rapid antigen (RA) self-tests can check if you may have COVID-19 and are now available to purchase for home use in Australia. These tests can be done at home by yourself. Most RA tests will provide you with a result in 15 to 30 minutes.

It’s faster but less accurate than a standard (PCR) test at a COVID-19 testing site.

RA tests can only tell you if you are likely to have COVID-19.

In Victoria, a standard (PCR) test is still needed to confirm if a person has COVID-19.

If you test positive from a rapid antigen test, then you must get tested with a standard (PCR) test, and stay isolated until you get your results.

RA tests are most reliable when used by a person who has symptoms of COVID-19. These tests are typically more accurate with frequent use (i.e. doing two to three tests over a week) if you don’t have any symptoms.
