Influenza vaccinations for 2024 are now available, with the vaccine recommended for everyone over the age of six months.
Influenza is highly contagious and, while it can be mild in some people, it can also cause severe illness, hospitalisation and death.
“Getting your annual influenza vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and those around you from influenza,” said SEPHU Director Professor Rhonda Stuart. ”The best time to be vaccinated is from mid-April, before the influenza season starts.”
Influenza vaccinations are free for children aged six months to five years, for pregnant women and for people most at risks of complications, under the National Immunisation Program.
Vaccinations are available through your local vaccination provider, including GPs, pharmacies and some councils.
As part of the Victorian Government’s “Stay Well This Winter” campaign, people are also being urged to ensure their COVID vaccination is up to date.
Professor Stuart said immunity from COVID fades over time. “You can recharge your immunity with a booster dose and protect yourself before winter.”
When you need your next booster depends on your age and your health. The most recent advice on when to have a booster can be found here.
