Vaccination is the best protection for mpox

The number of cases of mpox reported this year has doubled in the past few weeks, with 42 cases reported in Victoria as of 20 June 2024.

More than 40 per cent of the cases are in Melbourne’s south east.

Acting Director of the South East Public Health Unit Associate Professor Simon Crouch said people who are fully vaccinated – with two vaccines at least 28 days apart – have the best protection.

“I would urge men who are sexually active with other men to get both vaccine doses.”

Thorne Harbour Health is running free mpox vaccination clinics every Friday in St Kilda and on Saturday in Abbotsford, with other vaccination providers in the SEPHU catchment available here.
