Why wellbeing matters for falls prevention

Supporting wellbeing is an important part of effective falls prevention. When people feel confident, connected, and mentally well, they are more likely to move safely and maintain independence as they age.

Victoria’s Wellbeing in Victoria 10 year strategy places mental health and wellbeing at the centre of public health action. This aligns closely with SEPHU’s work in falls prevention, recognising that physical health and mental wellbeing are strongly linked.

People at higher risk of falling may experience social isolation, reduced confidence or anxiety. These factors can affect recovery and participation in prevention programs. The Wellbeing Strategy emphasises the value of inclusive communities, respectful environments, and building people’s capability to manage day to day challenges.

These principles directly strengthen falls prevention by supporting confidence, social connection, and a holistic approach to health. Embedding wellbeing into falls prevention initiatives helps promote safer movement, independence, resilience, and overall quality of life.
